Drive shafts, also known as CV shafts or axle shafts, are essential drivetrain components that transfer power from the transmission or differential to the wheels, allowing the vehicle to move. In front-wheel and all-wheel drive vehicles, CV (constant velocity) drive shafts are commonly used to maintain a smooth transfer of torque while accommodating the up-and-down motion of the suspension and steering angles.

Each drive shaft typically includes CV joints at both ends, protected by rubber boots filled with grease to ensure flexibility and durability. When a drive shaft or its CV joints start to wear out or fail, symptoms may include clicking or popping noises when turning, vibrations while accelerating, grease leaks or difficulty in maintaining traction.
