CV joints (short for Constant Velocity joints) are vital components of a vehicle’s drive shaft system, especially in front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive vehicles. Their primary function is to transfer torque from the transmission to the wheels at a constant speed, regardless of the angle of the suspension or steering. This allows the wheels to receive power while the car is turning, going over bumps, or navigating uneven roads without loss of speed or smoothness.

Each drive shaft usually has two CV joints:

• The outer CV joint connects to the wheel hub and handles steering angles.

• The inner CV joint connects to the transmission and manages up-and-down suspension movement.

CV joints are packed with grease and protected by rubber boots (CV boots) to prevent dirt and moisture from entering. When these boots tear or wear out, grease escapes and contaminants get in—leading to clicking noises when turning, vibrations or even drivetrain failure if not repaired in time. Replacing worn CV joints or boots helps ensure smooth, safe, and efficient power delivery to your wheels.
